Nestled in the Caribbean Sea just thirteen kilometers off the coast of Cancún sits Isla Mujeres, known for its relaxing atmosphere and stunning Playa Norte (North Beach). Playa Norte is the only beach on the island, featuring a host of hotels and resorts within walking distance. Day tourists flock to the island for a chance to be whisked away, while adventure-seekers check out the scuba diving scene. Both enjoy one of the island’s most unique attractions — MUSA underwater museum. Once the day tourists have headed back to Cancún, the real magic begins.
Travelers can get to the island on the ferry departing from the Gran Puerto dock in Puerto Juarez, Cancún. While only 30 minutes away from the mainland, Isla Mujeres’ calmer, more intimate atmosphere is best experienced overnight. It’s perfect for a vacation filled with rest and relaxation (leave the rental car on the mainland to instead get around on a golf cart like the local residents). Here are the best luxury hotels, resorts, and villas Isla Mujeres has to offer.
MÍA Reef Isla Mujeres
Of all the luxury resorts Isla Mujeres is home to, MÍA Reef feels the most private. It’s situated on its own islet near Playa Norte called Islote El Yunque. This hotel has four restaurants, including Las Marías, their poolside restaurant where you can enjoy gourmet meals. Their Blue Moon Bar is situated on the beach and their dockside restaurant Cevichería specializes in fresh seafood. Along with amenities like breakfast buffet at the Sarimar restaurant right next to the beach, the resort supplies gear for water sports like snorkeling and kayaking. MÍA Reef is also home to a tern sanctuary where thousands of terns build their nests between May and August each year. Go here for one of most unique luxury all-inclusive resorts offered on the island, including a dip in La Piscina del Rey, a natural rock formation pool next to the sea.

The land was bought by SHA, a wellness company that’s planning to open a wellness clinic spanning seven hectares in 2023. They’ve operated a clinic in Spain since 2008 with a focus on holistic practices that are sustainable and rejuvenating. The exterior landscaping will feature local species and the interiors will focus on creating a calming space that flows from one room to the next.
