Inside Look: Malibu Beach Inn

Beach lounging has never been easier at this boutique retreat.

Located a mere 34 steps down its private stairway to the ocean, the 5-star Malibu Beach Inn offers an intimate stay on the sands of Carbon Beach. First things first: this is the only hotel in Malibu with direct access to the beach.

A proud Leading Hotels of the World member, the entire property is themed around a laid-back beach house, with a minimalist design and thoughtful touches like hand-made furniture in each room. Step inside and guests are greeted by an expert team of hospitality professionals, a warm crew with superb attention to detail.

Our Editorial Director, Sarah Ludwig, recently visited this beachside boutique property to learn what makes MBI one of the most special accommodations in Malibu. Read on to discover more, including details about design, accommodation, amenities and dining.

Design

A comprehensive renovation and rebranding of the Malibu Beach Inn took place after the property was sold in 2015, pioneered by renowned interior designer, Waldo Fernandez. As well as remodeling the hotel’s exterior, Fernandez also worked on the accommodation, and the award-winning onsite Carbon Beach Club restaurant.

Furniture throughout the hotel is made from aesthetic Japanese-Scando inspired white oak and is completely bespoke, designed especially for the project. Paired with the ocean-themed whites, grays, and blues of the hotel accommodation, the Malibu Beach Inn feels luxurious and yet relaxed, modern yet classic. A collection of carefully selected artwork adorns the property walls throughout, chosen by the owner’s personal art curator.

The Rooms

Each of the Malibu Beach Inn’s 47 rooms and suites offers ocean views and a private balcony facing the ocean or the famous Malibu Pier.

The beach house theme applies in-room too, with light coastal tones, handcrafted white oak furniture, and floor-to-ceiling doors and windows. The minimalist design keeps the rooms light and airy, turning all eyes toward the main event — front-row seats to the Pacific.

There are thoughtfully curated touches throughout, such as Vitamin E boosters, pillow spray, Smeg kettle, and a minibar stocked with pre-mixed cocktails and award-winning local wine. The hotel’s One Bedroom Master Suite is especially remarkable, offering 600 square feet of refined space, king-size Sleep Number® bed, vinyl record player, and an expansive balcony that makes lounging above Carbon Beach a private affair.

In the bathroom, there’s an integrated TOTO Washlet, as well as a walk-in shower. Toiletries are by Bamford, a British company producing all-natural and organic body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Turning on the in-room fireplace isn’t always required but adds a cozy touch for maritime mornings.

Amenities

Practical amenities come as standard, with complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi available throughout the property, and wireless Bose Bluetooth speakers allowing guests to set the tone for their stay. Large televisions are equipped with 73 HD channels and pay-per-view movies, whilst bedding is also of the highest quality. Mattresses are custom-made, and the finest Bellino linen is used throughout. Made using completely natural materials, there are no synthetic fibers, good for people and the planet.

Another small but valued touch by the staff at the Malibu Beach Inn is the use of three different linen colors: Bottle Green, Washed-Out Blue, and Brilliant Yellow. Not only are these bright colors a welcoming sight, but they also ensure guests are aware that their sheets have been changed (a service guests can choose to decline).

Malibu Beach Inn guests enjoy access to the hotel spa partner Cure Spa & Fitness, which maintains a full-service spa, medispa, and state-of-the-art fitness easily accessible across the iconic Pacific Coast Highway.

Dining

Almost as outstanding as the views, The Carbon Beach Club restaurant (named after the Carbon Beach, a.k.a “Billionaire’s Beach”, on which the hotel sits) was also completely re-developed by Fernandez. Known as the CBC, this award-winning restaurant takes inspiration from the coastline on which it is located, alongside the fresh flavors of the Pacific. The restaurant is open to the public, but priority is given to hotel guests. Malibu Beach Inn sources its ingredients from the vicinity when possible, supporting local farmers’ markets and nearby ranches within 2-miles of the hotel.

The CBC makes extensive use of outdoor space, with all tables offering seaside and Malibu Pier views on the oceanfront terrace. Seafood takes a leading role on the menu, and when it comes to drinks, CBC’s passionate bar team is ready to craft classic and innovative cocktails or pour a glass from the sommelier’s superb wine list; in fact, the CBC is the proud owner of eight consecutive Wine Spectator Awards.

Special thanks to the Malibu Beach Inn team.
